As you can see, there are many ways to make a buck in the podcasting world. But what you need first and foremost is an audience, and what that audience needs is a quality show. Build it and they will come, as the saying goes. 124 For examples of podcasters who have done just that, read on to the next chapter which details many of the best podcasts around – and what you as a producer or presenter can pick up by listening to them.

Chapter 4: The pick of the pods

There are currently in excess of 280,000 different podcast shows in more than 100 different languages available on the iTunes store, listed across 16 categories, including arts, comedy, technology and sport. Apple employs local editorial staff to curate, recommend and constantly update the storefronts in the company’s various territories. Staff picks sit alongside various charts, but iTunes is – frankly – far from faultless when it comes to discovering new and exciting content. A quick glance at the Top 10 podcasts on UK iTunes shows six BBC radio programmes, one spin-off from a BBC television show, the Guardian ’s Football Weekly (there’s no accounting for taste), Serial and This American Life.

So far, so predictable.

If you’re new to podcasting, there are two rules of thumb when navigating the podosphere. First, audio on-demand is not just about the output from BBC and NPR. And second, as is to be expected with anything to do with the internet, there is an awful lot of rubbish out there: just because you can publish, it doesn’t mean you should. Amateur podcasts can be great, but the very best podcasts are invariably made by people who do it for a living. As I have said elsewhere, the bar has been raised so high in recent years that listeners will not put up with shoddy sound or production as they might have a decade ago when podcasting was still a novel and marginal pursuit.

To help guide you towards the best sounds around and to introduce your ears to new experiences and innovative production and presentation techniques, here follows a selection of what I consider to be – as Tony Blackburn might say – the pick of the pods 125.

A few caveats before we get going.

As my linguistic skills do not formally go beyond GCSE French and Latin, these are all English language shows emanating from the UK or America 126. I will be open and honest with my recommendations – many of which were originally pointed out to me by colleagues and fellow podoholics – and I’ll declare any vested interests. A few of my selections, yes, are versions of existing radio shows – but the vast majority are podcasts pure and true. Many are made by professional producers or media organisations, but some are comprised of a group of friends talking about a subject they love: I give no added weight to either. Also, not all of these podcasts have bells and whistles when it comes to their production.
